New Zealand fishing company Sanford Ltd. faces a $3 million fine after a Washington federal jury on Wednesday convicted it of falsifying records tracking how one of its ships was managing its bilge waste and falsely stating that required pollution prevention equipment had been used when it had not.

A federal judge in Washington on Monday refused to toss out criminal charges lodged against commercial fishing company Sanford Ltd. for allegedly discharging oil-contaminated sludge into the ocean, leaving the shipper on the hook for $24 million worth of illegal pollution activity.
