Residents of an Illinois village allegedly contaminated by benzene spills from the Wood River Refinery have raised objections to a proposed $5 million settlement that would end a class action against refinery operator Shell Oil in Illinois federal court, calling the deal a "slap in the face."

Illinois village residents who alleged that Shell Oil and other operators of the Wood River Refinery let hazardous benzene contaminate their properties and water supply filed a motion in Illinois federal court Friday seeking preliminary approval of a $4.83 million class action settlement in the case.
