A Delaware magistrate judge recommended Tuesday that the federal court deny a bid by Chiquita Brands International Inc. affiliates to be freed from a suit alleging they and other companies exposed banana farm workers in Ecuador to harmful pesticides.

A group of Chiquita Brands International Inc. affiliates asked a Delaware federal judge Friday to free them from a portion of litigation alleging they and others exposed Central and South American banana farmers to harmful pesticides, arguing the Ecuadorian farmers in the suit had not laid out specific claims against the brand.

A Delaware federal judge on Tuesday dismissed Dole Food Co. Inc. and four others from suits claiming the companies exposed banana plantation workers to the harmful pesticide DBCP, ruling the duplicative suits should be decided in the district where they were first brought.
