A California federal judge lambasted both sides Tuesday in a race bias suit against United Airlines Inc., even as he vacated his recent call for the black airline pilots and supervisors suing the airline to show why they shouldn't be sanctioned for avoiding a protective order.

A California federal judge on Wednesday tossed nearly all claims in a suit brought by black United Continental Holdings Inc. airline pilots and supervisors who allege the airline offers minority employees far fewer opportunities than their white counterparts for promotions.
