A Texas judge on Monday rebuffed an attempt by Travelers Property Casualty Co. to overturn an $8.5 million judgment relating to the cleanup of a 2011 explosion at an Eagle Oil & Gas Co. facility, after a federal jury found the insurer didn't prove the company was negligent.

Travelers Property Casualty Co. of America was ordered Wednesday to pay Eagle Oil & Gas Co. over $8.5 million in a suit over cleanup costs associated with a 2011 well blowout at an Eagle Oil facility, days after a Texas federal jury found the insurer didn't prove the company could have done more to prevent the blast.

A Texas jury on Friday found that Travelers Property Casualty Co. of America did not prove that Eagle Oil & Gas Co. failed to act reasonably to prevent a well explosion that led it to file a suit seeking coverage for environmental damage.

A Texas federal court on Sunday ruled that Travelers Property Casualty Co. of America can't shake Eagle Oil & Gas Co.'s suit over coverage for cleanup costs connected to an oil well blowout without a trial but agreed to trim the oil developer's claims that the insurance giant had acted in bad faith.
