A South Dakota federal judge on Tuesday granted final approval of a pair of consent decrees between the government and Cyprus Mines Corp. and Homestake Mining Co., with the companies agreeing to pay a combined $30 million to settle pollution allegations at an abandoned gold and silver mine.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the state of South Dakota launched a suit Thursday seeking to recover more than $100 million from four mining companies that allegedly contributed to pollution at an abandoned gold and silver mine.
