The Federal Trade Commission will face off Monday against St. Luke's Health System Ltd. in a trial challenging the hospital group's acquisition of the Idaho region's largest independent physician practice, in a case that will test the antitrust watchdog's ability to take on mergers between hospital groups and major physician practices.

An Idaho federal judge on Thursday refused to stop St. Luke's Health System Ltd. from purchasing a local physician practice, finding that rival St. Alphonsus Health System Inc. could not show it will suffer immediate referral drops or forced layoffs because of the deal.
