A Manhattan art gallery has urged a federal court to deny XL Specialty Insurance Co's bid for reimbursement of a claim paid for a Dutch master painting presumed stolen that turned out to be merely misplaced, saying, in effect, that established law clearly supports Shakespeare's maxim, "But men are men; the best sometimes forget."

XL Specialty Insurance Co. asked a New York federal judge Thursday to order a Manhattan art gallery to reimburse the insurer for covering a painting the owner reported stolen when it turns out he merely forgot he had sent it to be reframed.
