A Pennsylvania federal judge on Tuesday lifted a stay he had imposed on a suit brought by several state judges challenging Pennsylvania's mandatory judicial retirement age, moving ahead with proceedings two weeks after the Pennsylvania Supreme Court unanimously upheld the mandate in related suits.

Pennsylvania officials, including Gov. Tom Corbett, have fired back at a federal lawsuit challenging a provision of the state's constitution requiring judges to retire upon reaching the age of 70 on equal protection and due process grounds, arguing that courts had found the mandate served a rational and legally acceptable purpose.
