Auto parts manufacturer Johnson Controls Inc. on Thursday escaped a class action suit brought by a set of retirees from Pennsylvania factories, after a federal judge concluded that collective bargaining agreements gave the company the ability to unilaterally reduce health benefits.

A Pennsylvania federal judge on Wednesday certified six subclasses of Johnson Controls Inc. retirees who worked at factories in the state's York area, in a suit over the auto parts giant's reducing benefits after taking over from a previous employer.
