A Chesapeake Energy Corp. unit reached a trial-morning settlement with the billionaire Bass family and other plaintiffs that claimed in a Texas federal case that the energy company shorted them on royalty proceeds from natural gas wells in the Barnett Shale, a lawyer for the plaintiffs confirmed.

A Texas federal judge has held that Chesapeake Operating Inc. is not permitted to deduct post-production costs under a series of Barnett Shale leases, giving the billionaire Bass family of Fort Worth and other plaintiffs strong footing heading into an early September mineral royalties trial.
