Catholic Health East Is Exempt From ERISA, Judge Told
Catholic Health East's strong ties to the Roman Catholic Church exempt it from the Employee Retirement Income Security Act and warrant dismissal of a putative class action alleging that the health care system underfunded its pension plan by more than $438 million, a Pennsylvania federal judge heard Tuesday.

Health care system Catholic Health East was hit with a proposed class action Friday alleging the Pennsylvania-based nonprofit has underfunded pension plans for 60,000 employees by more than $438 million, in violation of the Employee Retirement Income Security Act.
