A Chevron Corp subsidiary is insisting that the federal government is liable for environmental cleanup costs at a New Mexico Superfund site, lodging a suit in federal court Friday claiming the U.S. encouraged and financed the mining and waste disposal activities at the site that caused soil and water contamination.
