The South Carolina Public Service Authority has agreed to remove 1.3 million tons of coal ash from the banks of the Waccamaw River to settle pollution and Clean Water Act suits brought by environmental groups, their attorneys said Tuesday.

An environmental group upset about alleged arsenic pollution from a recently shuttered coal-fired power plant lodged a Clean Water Act suit against the South Carolina Public Service Authority in federal court Monday, contending that carcinogenic waste stored at the site is seeping into local waters.
