A California federal judge on Wednesday threw out virtually all of a class action alleging software applications distributed through Apple Inc.’s App Store surreptitiously lifted mobile device users’ contact information, clearing Apple of consumer deception and a slew of app developers of data theft. Correction: An earlier headline implied that the suit had been completely dismissed. The error has been corrected.

A California federal judge on Monday denied Apple Inc.'s effort to sink a proposed class action claiming the company failed to prevent third-party software applications distributed through its online App Store from uploading user information from Apple's mobile devices without users' permission.
