At least 16 lawsuits filed against seed giant Monsanto Co. over the appearance of unapproved genetically engineered wheat will be consolidated in Kansas, the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation ruled Wednesday.

Monsanto Co. was hit with a gross negligence suit in Kansas federal court Monday from a farmer who said the biotechnology company caused wheat export futures prices to plummet after its unapproved, genetically modified form of wheat unexpectedly surfaced in an Oregon field, triggering a scare.
