K&L Gates LLP on Monday urged a California federal judge to toss a suit filed by a putative class of investors of an oil and gas company over the firm's role in its bankruptcy case, saying it violates the automatic stay and that the firm never represented the investors.

Investors suing K&L Gates LLP for malpractice over its role in an oil and gas company's bankruptcy case urged a California federal judge Monday to reject the firm's bid to dismiss their claims, saying the legal doctrines the firm pointed to aren't applicable.

K&L Gates LLP asked a California federal court Monday to cut legal malpractice claims from a securities class action against its clients, former directors of oil and gas company Tri-Valley Corp., saying the law firm never owed the investors of its clients any fiduciary duty and the claims are barred by an automatic stay in bankruptcy court anyway.
