    A D.C. federal judge on Wednesday gave the Cherokee Nation, the descendants of slaves owned by tribal members and the U.S. government 30 days to sort out lingering issues preventing final judgment that would close out a tribal citizenship mandate issued for the descendants last year.

    Cherokee Must Wait On Final Freedmen Citizenship Order

    The Cherokee Nation is eager to fully grant citizenship to descendants of slaves owned by tribal members, but they'll have to wait a little longer after a D.C. federal judge said Thursday that more briefing was required before closing out a mandate first issued in August.

    DC Judge Says Freedmen Have Cherokee Citizenship Right

    A D.C. federal judge ruled Wednesday that the descendants of slaves who had been owned by members of the Cherokee Nation have the same right as native Cherokees to citizenship in the tribe under an 1866 treaty, despite the Nation's efforts to exclude them from its rolls.
