The federal government will pay more than $31 million to ABB Inc. to cover environmental cleanup costs related to a 60-year-old U.S. Atomic Energy Commission project, following a Connecticut federal judge's approval of the parties' consent decree on Friday.

A subsidiary of Switzerland-based robotics company ABB Ltd. hit the U.S. government with a civil action in Connecticut federal court on Thursday seeking to recover $64 million in costs it incurred addressing the release of hazardous substances at a property owned by Combustion Engineering Inc.
