A former U.S. Department of Energy laboratory contractor will no longer be blocked from releasing an open-source version of software he designed for his former employer to protect electric utilities from cyberattacks after an Idaho federal judge found Tuesday that the alleged trade secret theft does not pose a national security risk.

A former U.S. Department of Energy laboratory contractor can't release an open-source version of software designed to protect electric utilities from cyberattacks because doing so would likely constitute copyright infringement that would threaten national security, an Idaho federal judge said Tuesday.
