A New Jersey federal judge refused Monday to enforce Thomas & Betts Corp.'s indemnity and defense obligations to former defendant Liberty Mutual Insurance Co. under a previous settlement over asbestos litigation costs, saying the court couldn't extend its jurisdiction to consider the underlying agreement.

Travelers Indemnity Co. has agreed to dismiss Affiliated FM Insurance Co. from a suit it filed in an effort to avoid defending or indemnifying electrical parts manufacturer Thomas & Betts Corp. in asbestos litigation, based on Affiliated FM's earlier settlement with the policyholder, according to court documents filed Tuesday.
