A Chicago attorney who allegedly helped professional athletes and wealthy attorneys fraudulently claim $16 million in tax credits has been barred from representing or advising clients on tax matters and preparing tax returns for individuals outside his family, according to a court document released Thursday.

The U.S. Department of Justice hit prominent Chicago tax attorney Gary J. Stern with a lawsuit Friday, demanding an Illinois district court put a stop to his $16 million in alleged tax scams involving high net worth professional athletes, entrepreneurs and attorneys.
