TainoApp Inc. on Monday defended its patent infringement lawsuit against Amazon.com Inc. over the Kindle's smart search function, saying the Internet retailer is attempting to "hijack" the litigation with what it calls a meritless sanctions motion.

Amazon.com Inc. moved Wednesday to end a lawsuit brought by TainoApp Inc. accusing the Kindle's smart search function of infringing a patent covering digital displays, and sanction the company for asserting legal claims Amazon says "directly contradict" the basis for why the patent was approved in the first place.
