Vans Inc. fired back Monday at a lawsuit claiming it was infringing the trademark-protected blue labels seen on the heels of Keds LLC sneakers, calling the tags a functional and aesthetic element that cannot be monopolized by one shoemaker.

Keds LLC hit rival shoemaker Vans Inc. with a suit in Massachusetts federal court, accusing at least 21 Vans shoes of infringing Keds' trademark blue label on the heels of its sneakers.
