A California federal judge refused Tuesday to keep a putative class action against Toyota Motor North America Inc. over allegedly defective power-door components in his district, saying it appeared plaintiff judge-shopping may have landed him the case.

Toyota Motor North America Inc. was hit with a putative class action in California federal court Thursday alleging it allowed defective power-door components in its Highlander SUV but denied the problem, causing potentially thousands of buyers to spend nearly $5,000 each to fix the defect.
