Ironshore Specialty Insurance Co. on Wednesday escaped owing an insurance broker roughly $28 million stemming from damage to Houston-area apartments caused by Hurricane Ike, finding that a claim the broker sought coverage for fell outside the policy period.

Ironshore Specialty Insurance Co. told a Texas federal judge Thursday that Southwest Risk LP and ClearView Risk Holdings LLC have based their bid for about $28 million stemming from damage to Houston apartments caused by Hurricane Ike on "irrelevant and unfounded arguments."

Southwest Risk LP and ClearView Risk Holdings LLC on Monday hit Ironshore Specialty Insurance Co. with a $27.6 million suit accusing it of failing to provide coverage for loss claims submitted to Southwest Risk after Hurricane Ike damaged some Texas apartments in 2008.
