An Illinois federal judge on Friday refused to certify a class of potentially millions of homeowners on claims that Fluidmaster made defective home plumbing connectors that caused massive amounts of water damage, ruling California consumer protection law cannot be applied nationwide.

Fluidmaster on Wednesday sought to shut down consumers' certification bid in multidistrict litigation accusing the company of making faulty water supply lines that caused millions of dollars in water damage, telling an Illinois federal judge the group lacks commonality and exceeds the scope of the California law they're suing under.

An Illinois federal judge on Tuesday held off on outright dismissing a putative class of California homeowners alleging Fluidmaster's "No-Burst" pipes actually do regularly burst but told class counsel that they should follow proper procedure if they want the Californians folded into multidistrict litigation claiming the pipes caused millions of dollars in water damage to homes around the nation.
