A New York federal judge ruled Thursday that she couldn't hear a case brought by the Ohio paint company Sherwin-Williams, leaving the company to arbitrate in Texas against the former owners of a Mexican company that competition authorities prevented it from acquiring.

A New York federal judge showed little inclination Wednesday to entertain Sherwin-Williams Co.'s suit seeking a judgment that it did everything it could to gain antitrust clearance before its $2.3 billion deal to buy Mexican paint business Consorcio Comex SA de CV failed, citing the case's tenuous ties to New York.
