A New Jersey federal judge on Tuesday pared a putative class action accusing Mazda Motor of America Inc. of concealing an engine valve defect in certain vehicles, tossing claims for violations of state consumer protection law and breach of implied warranty, but keeping express warranty claims in play.

Mazda Motor of America Inc. asked a New Jersey federal court Monday to gut a proposed class action accusing it of concealing an engine valve system defect in certain Mazda vehicles, saying the majority of the suit's claims have not been adequately pled and must be thrown out.
