A West Virginia federal judge has ruled that Fola Coal Company LLC violated its National Pollution Discharge Elimination System permits by dumping harmful material into local waterways, degrading aquatic life and preventing residents from enjoying the impacted area.

Four environmental groups sued Fola Coal Company LLC in West Virginia federal court Monday, accusing the Consol Energy Inc. unit of discharging mining waste that threatens aquatic life and prevents residents from recreating in the affected area.
