The federal government on Friday dropped its suit alleging nine Florida hospitals and an ambulance service committed fraud involving federal health care programs, with the health care providers paying more than $7.5 million to settle the False Claims Act case, the U.S. Department of Justice said.

A Jacksonville, Florida-area ambulance company bilked Medicare and Medicaid out of $5 million by submitting claims for ambulance services that were either unnecessary or overblown, with the aid of a quartet of local hospitals, according to a whistleblower False Claims Act complaint filed Wednesday in federal court.
