One of the country's largest prison telephone service providers agreed Monday to pay $67 million to end customers' claims it wrongfully took possession of funds placed in prepaid accounts for calling inmates if the accounts went unused for a certain time.

A federal judge in Georgia sanctioned a prison technology company over its repeated attempts of "subterfuge" amid a long-running class action concerning its inmate calling services, writing that the company shouldn't be "able to escape any real consequence" for its bad faith during the suit.

A New Jersey federal judge gave his final approval of a settlement deal that would see a prison technology company give out $25 million in cash and phone credits to end claims it overcharged for inmate calling services, and will also allow plaintiffs in a separate suit against the company to weigh in on the matter.
