A California federal judge sent a plaintiff back to the drawing board Thursday in his proposed class action against Hewlett-Packard Co. for allegedly cheating customers with shorter-than-advertised warranties on its computers.

Hewlett-Packard Co. on Wednesday removed to California federal court a putative class action accusing it of starting the date of its limited warranty period for computer hardware prior to purchase by customers in violation of false-advertising and consumer-protection laws.
