A California federal judge on Wednesday decimated a suit alleging residential landlord giant AvalonBay Communities illegally required workers to request premium pay to compensate for missed meal or rest breaks, refusing to certify a class of nearly 1,500 employees and tossing the class claims from the suit.

Hourly workers for AvalonBay Communities urged a California federal judge Monday to certify a class of nearly 1,500 Golden State employees, saying the residential landlord giant illegally required workers to request premium pay to compensate for missed meal or rest breaks instead of automatically awarding it.
