A California federal judge on Tuesday trimmed three claims in a gender discrimination suit brought by a former Broadcom Corp. attorney accusing the chipmaker of comparing female employees to "kittens with balls of yarn," saying her whistleblower claim failed since she didn't report any violations to securities regulators.

A California federal judge Monday tentatively refused to force a former Broadcom Corp. attorney to arbitrate her gender discrimination and retaliation suit, but said he probably wasn't ready to let her publicly reveal details of the purported corporate wrongdoing she claims got her fired.
