Sterling Jewelers Inc. urged a Georgia federal court Friday not to certify a class of consumers alleging it violated the Telephone Consumer Protection Act by auto-dialing cellphones to collect overdue bills, arguing it's impossible to create a class based on the company's use of wrong numbers.

A putative class action alleging Sterling Jewelers violated the Telephone Consumer Protection Act by placing automated calls to cellphones in an effort to collect unrelated debt was moved to Georgia federal court from a state court, according to a filing Friday.
