A Montana federal judge on Tuesday allowed Signal Peak Energy LLC to conduct limited coal mining at a site in the state but forbade the coal from being shipped, amending an August order that halted some activity on an expanded section of the mine so the government could take another look at the company's mining plan.

A Montana district judge on Monday told the U.S. Office of Surface Mining and Enforcement to revisit its approval of Signal Peak Energy LLC's coal mine expansion plan, saying the office's environmental assessment of the project didn't take a hard look at its effect on greenhouse gas emissions.

Signal Peak Energy LLC shot back at claims from environmental advocacy groups that federal approval for its coal mine expansion plan was arbitrary, saying that the purpose and need statement in the project's environmental assessment was not unlawful.
