A water treatment company cannot yet force Levi Strauss & Co. to arbitrate a $15 million royalty dispute, a California federal judge has ruled, finding it's too soon to decide on licensing issues for a patented process used to color garments.

Levi Strauss & Co. told a California federal court Wednesday that a water treatment company trying to force Levi to arbitrate a $15 million contract dispute is forum shopping and therefore can't use its own New York suit to shake the denim company's lawsuit seeking to block arbitration.

Levi Strauss & Co. asked a California federal court on Monday to prohibit a water treatment company from forcing it into arbitration over claims that it's owed more than $15 million in royalties, arguing the move is an attempt to resurrect a long-expired contract claim.
