An Oregon federal judge on Friday struck down a bid by small-scale miners and prospectors to wipe out an Oregon law imposing a five-year ban for motorized mining methods in certain salmon habitats, finding the legislation to be a reasonable environmental restriction not preempted by federal law.

A group of gold, silver and other mineral miners has sued the state of Oregon to try to stop legislation that imposes a five-year moratorium on suction dredge mining and other forms of motorized mining on certain streams that is intended to protect salmon.
