Sports equipment maker Schutt Sports asked an Illinois federal judge not to reassign its dispute over football helmet designs with rival Riddell Inc. Monday, arguing the case only has a "superficial" relationship with a patent suit filed by Riddell against another equipment maker.

Sport equipment maker Riddell Inc. hit rivals Schutt Sports and Xenith LLC with a pair of lawsuits in Illinois federal court on Thursday, accusing the companies of infringing patents for the design of football helmets.
