An Illinois federal judge on Friday granted a bid from Uber Technologies Inc. to compel arbitration in a proposed class action alleging the ride-hailing service misclassified drivers as independent contractors, but refused to toss the case as a whole.

Uber moved Friday to toss an Illinois proposed wage-and-hour class action accusing the ride-hailing service of misclassifying drivers as independent contractors, saying the dispute must be individually arbitrated given the recent Ninth Circuit ruling that ex-Uber drivers must arbitrate their background-check claims.
