A former Chicago Board Options Exchange director was ordered Tuesday to pay $21.7 million after failing to respond to a U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission lawsuit accusing him of lining his pockets with money that investors were falsely led to believe was placed into two commodity pools.

The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission on Tuesday slapped a former Chicago Board Options Exchange director with an Illinois federal suit claiming he fraudulently solicited more than $6.9 million from at least 30 investors, including family and friends, in a Ponzi-like scheme.
