Exxon Mobil Corp., ConocoPhillips Co. and a long list of other companies urged a Rhode Island federal judge to toss a lawsuit brought by the Ocean State over alleged contamination from a gasoline additive, saying the "vague and speculative assertions" shouldn't be entertained by the court.

The state of Rhode Island on Tuesday hit Exxon Mobil Corp. and dozens of other gasoline companies with a suit over alleged methyl tertiary-butyl ether groundwater contamination in the state, echoing similar suits that have been brought by states over the controversial gasoline additive.
