Vanguard Healthcare LLC and related companies have agreed to an $18.6 million settlement to end a False Claims Act suit by the federal government and Tennessee that alleged Vanguard's nursing facilities billed Medicare and Medicaid for services while failing to provide care for their patients, the U.S. Department of Justice announced Wednesday.

The U.S. Department of Justice and the state of Tennessee can proceed with a False Claims Act suit against Vanguard Healthcare LLC alleging the company provided "grossly substandard" care, even as the nursing home provider engages in Chapter 11 proceedings, a federal judge said Monday.

The U.S. Department of Justice on Wednesday announced a False Claims Act suit against bankrupt nursing home provider Vanguard Healthcare LLC in Tennessee federal court, alleging the company didn't provide "the most basic and essential skilled nursing services" and misbilled Medicare and Medicaid.
