Perdue Farms has quietly settled one of many suits accusing the poultry giant of participating in a cartel of rivals that colluded to keep the price of chicken high, according to documents filed in an Oklahoma federal court.

Attorneys for major chicken companies who are accused of operating a cartel to suppress the price of broiler chickens urged the Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation on Thursday not to consolidate five lawsuits against them all containing the antitrust claims, against the wishes of farmers who want the cases combined in Oklahoma.

The Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation has rejected a group of farmers' request to combine two lawsuits accusing major chicken companies of operating a cartel to suppress the price of broiler chickens in Oklahoma federal court, saying centralization is unnecessary because a "minimal number of actions are involved."
