    A California federal judge on Thursday granted a request by the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians to intervene in Santa Barbara County’s lawsuit challenging the Bureau of Indian Affairs’ decision to take more than 1,400 acres of land into trust for the tribe and halted the case while a further administrative appeal could be heard.

    Calif. County Challenges BIA Over 1,400 Trust Acres For Tribe

    The county of Santa Barbara sued the Bureau of Indian Affairs in California federal court on Saturday to challenge a decision taking more than 1,400 acres of land into trust for the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians for tribal housing and economic development, claiming the decision flouted trust acquisition regulations and environmental law.
