The U.S. government backed down Friday on its demand that Twitter Inc. unmask the identity of the user behind an anonymous account critical of the Trump administration's immigration policies, withdrawing a summons a day after the company sued the government in California federal court to block the request.

Twitter Inc. sued the Trump administration Thursday in California federal court, saying the U.S. Department of Homeland Security was seeking the identities behind an anonymous account blasting the president's immigration policies that claims to be a creation of government employees within the department.
