Cigarette companies owned by the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska urged the D.C. Circuit on Friday to pause its ruling that the companies must let the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives inspect their sales records, saying the case raises tribal sovereignty concerns the U.S. Supreme Court ought to tackle.

The D.C. Circuit on Tuesday upheld a ruling that four cigarette companies owned by the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska must let the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives inspect their sales records, saying that being owned by a tribe doesn't shield tribal companies from federal record-keeping laws.
