A D.C. federal judge says the U.S. Department of the Interior was inexplicably unable to find documents likely to exist in response to an advocacy group's request for records related to the Trump administration's move to end a coal leasing moratorium on federal lands.

The Center for Biological Diversity on Tuesday hit the federal government with a lawsuit in D.C. district court, accusing the U.S. Bureau of Land Management of withholding public records related to the Trump administration's decision to end a moratorium on new coal mining leases on federal lands and alleging officials might have held secret meetings with the coal industry.
