A split Ninth Circuit vacated Ford Motor Co.'s settlement with a class of Ford Fiesta and Focus owners who say their transmissions are defective, finding Friday that the district court was not skeptical enough of the estimated $35 million value placed on the deal by the class counsel's expert.

Ford Fiesta and Focus drivers told a California federal judge on Friday that the attorneys representing objectors seeking to derail their $35 million class settlement with Ford Motor Co. over defective transmissions should be forced to cough up an almost $475,000 bond for their "baseless" appeal to the Ninth Circuit.
